KSYM_NAME_LEN is peculiar in that it does not include the space for the trailing '\0', forcing all users to use KSYM_NAME_LEN + 1 when allocating buffer. This is nonsense and error-prone. Moreover, when the caller forgets that it's very likely to subtly bite back by corrupting the stack because the last position of the buffer is always cleared to zero. This patch increments KSYM_NAME_LEN by one and updates code accordingly. * off-by-one bug in asm-powerpc/kprobes.h::kprobe_lookup_name() macro is fixed. * Where MODULE_NAME_LEN and KSYM_NAME_LEN were used together, MODULE_NAME_LEN was treated as if it didn't include space for the trailing '\0'. When data symbols are not present in kernel image, user needs to add dot(".") before function name explicitly, that he wants to probe in kprobe module on ppc64. for ex:- When data symbols are missing on ppc64, ==================== [root@llm27lp1 ~]# cat /proc/kallsyms | grep do_fork c00000000006283c T .do_fork ============================== User needs add "." to "do_fork" kp.symbol_name = ".do_fork"; ============================ This makes kprobe modules unportable. In an effort to make kprobe modules more portable, here is a patch that: o Introduces the "symbol_name" field to struct kprobe. The symbol->address resolution now happens in the kernel in an architecture agnostic manner. 64-bit powerpc users no longer have to specify the ".symbols" o Introduces the "offset" field to struct kprobe to allow a user to specify an offset into a symbol. o The legacy mechanism of specifying the kprobe.addr is still supported. However, if both the kprobe.addr and kprobe.symbol_name are specified, probe registration fails with an -EINVAL. o The symbol resolution code uses kallsyms_lookup_name(). So CONFIG_KPROBES now depends on CONFIG_KALLSYMS o Apparantly kprobe modules were the only legitimate out-of-tree user of the kallsyms_lookup_name() EXPORT. Now that the symbol resolution happens in-kernel, remove the EXPORT as suggested by Christoph Hellwig o Modify tcp_probe.c that uses the kprobe interface so as to make it work on multiple platforms (in its earlier form, the code wouldn't work, say, on powerpc) Signed-off-by:

Kprobe inserts breakpoint instruction in probepoint and then jumps to instruction slot when breakpoint is hit, the instruction slot icache must be consistent with dcache. Here is the patch which invalidates instruction slot icache area. Without this patch, in some machines there will be fault when executing instruction slot where icache content is inconsistent with dcache. Signed-off-by:

With this patch Kprobes now registers for page fault notifications only when their is an active probe registered. Once all the active probes are unregistered their is no need to be notified of page faults and kprobes unregisters itself from the page fault notifications. Currently arch_remove_kprobes() is only implemented/required for x86_64 and powerpc. All other architecture like IA64, i386 and sparc64 implementes a dummy function which is being called from arch independent kprobes.c file. The arch specific kprobes.h files never gets included when CONFIG_KPROBES is turned off. Hence check for CONFIG_KPROBES is not appropriate here in this arch specific kprobes.h files. Kernel/kprobes.c defines get_insn_slot() and free_insn_slot() which are currently required _only_ for x86_64 and powerpc (which has no-exec support). FYI, get{free}_insn_slot() functions manages the memory page which is mapped as executable, required for instruction emulation. This patch moves those two functions under __ARCH_WANT_KPROBES_INSN_SLOT and defines __ARCH_WANT_KPROBES_INSN_SLOT in arch specific kprobes.h file. Signed-off-by:

include/asm-ppc/ had #ifdef __KERNEL__ in all header files that are not meant for use by user space, include/asm-powerpc does not have this yet. This patch gets us a lot closer there. There are a few cases where I was not sure, so I left them out. I have verified that no CONFIG_* symbols are used outside of __KERNEL__ any more and that there are no obvious compile errors when including any of the headers in user space libraries. Signed-off-by:

This creates the directory structure under arch/powerpc and a bunch of Kconfig files. It does a first-cut merge of arch/powerpc/mm, arch/powerpc/lib and arch/powerpc/platforms/powermac. This is enough to build a 32-bit powermac kernel with ARCH=powerpc. For now we are getting some unmerged files from arch/ppc/kernel and arch/ppc/syslib, or arch/ppc64/kernel. This makes some minor changes to files in those directories and files outside arch/powerpc. The boot directory is still not merged. That's going to be interesting. Signed-off-by:

This patch fixes a race condition where in system used to hang or sometime crash within minutes when kprobes are inserted on ISR routine and a task routine. The fix has been stress tested on i386, ia64, pp64 and on x86_64. To reproduce the problem insert kprobes on schedule() and do_IRQ() functions and you should see hang or system crash. Signed-off-by:

The following is a patch provided by Ananth Mavinakayanahalli that implements the new PPC64 specific parts of the new function return probe design. NOTE: Since getting Ananth's patch, I changed trampoline_probe_handler() to consume each of the outstanding return probem instances (feedback on my original RFC after Ananth cut a patch), and also added the arch_init() function (adding arch specific initialization.) I have cross compiled but have not testing this on a PPC64 machine. Changes include: * Addition of kretprobe_trampoline to act as a dummy function for instrumented functions to return to, and for the return probe infrastructure to place a kprobe on on, gaining control so that the return probe handler can be called, and so that the instruction pointer can be moved back to the original return address. * Addition of arch_init(), allowing a kprobe to be registered on kretprobe_trampoline * Addition of trampoline_probe_handler() which is used as the pre_handler for the kprobe inserted on kretprobe_implementation. This is the function that handles the details for calling the return probe handler function and returning control back at the original return address * Addition of arch_prepare_kretprobe() which is setup as the pre_handler for a kprobe registered at the beginning of the target function by kernel/kprobes.c so that a return probe instance can be setup when a caller enters the target function. (A return probe instance contains all the needed information for trampoline_probe_handler to do it's job.) * Hooks added to the exit path of a task so that we can cleanup any left-over return probe instances (i.e. if a task dies while inside a targeted function then the return probe instance was reserved at the beginning of the function but the function never returns so we need to mark the instance as unused.) Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
